How Himalayan Pink Salt Can Improve Your Athletic Performance

What is Himalayan Pink Salt?

Himalayan pink salt is the purest salt to be found on earth. It packs a hearty 80+ minerals and elements. The many hues of pink, red and white are an indication of this salt’s rich and varying mineral and energy-rich iron content. It is now hand-mined from the Himalayan mountains and brought to the culinary market.

Why not just regular table salt?

The main reason is the level of processing between the two types of salt. Himalayan sea salt is produced by the direct evaporation of seawater, whereas table salt is produced by high-heat processing, a process that strips away other trace minerals leaving only sodium and chloride. Commercial refined salt is not only stripped of all its minerals, besides sodium and chloride, but is also chemically cleaned and bleached.

Why do athletes need it most?

Triathletes generally have a higher requirement for salt than non-athletes because they lose salt through sweat. I recommend that athletes use only the highest quality salts when they are making foods at home – put a pinch of Himalayan salt into smoothies (it brings out the sweetness and flavors too!), and always cook with high quality salts, which along with the sodium contain a number of important minerals that the body needs.  Sometimes when we crave salty foods, our bodies are seeking minerals – which are lacking in processed and packaged foods.

If you’re an athlete, with an upcoming race that’s in a hot and humid climate, you may benefit from upping your intake of salt in the lead up (1-2 weeks) to the event. And during training or racing, it’s essential for athletes to replace sodium to prevent hypothermia, with the amount of sodium required best determined by a sweat test.

What are the other benefits?

Some of the benefits that you can expect to enjoy by consuming this salt in place of regular table salt include:

  • Aids in vascular health
  • Supports healthy lungs and respiratory function
  • Promotes a stable pH balance within the cells
  • Reduces the signs of aging
  • Promotes healthy sleep patterns
  • Increases libido
  • Prevents muscle cramps
  • Increases hydration
  • Strengthen bones
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Improves circulation
